POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for laying out, fitting, and assembling fabricated pipe systems and spool assemblies from drawings and isometrics. The Pipe Fitter must accurately establish dimensions, fitting orientation, flange position, offsets, elevations, and joint preparation so assemblies are correct and ready for the pipe welder. Relocation assistance available if moving from out of the area up to $4500

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Read and interpret pipe fabrication drawings, spool drawings, isometrics, dimensions, elevations, orientation information, and weld requirements.
• Identify and verify pipe, elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, couplings, branch components, and other fittings required for each assembly.
• Calculate and establish center-to-center, face-to-face, end-to-end, takeout, offset, and other required fabrication dimensions.
• Lay out and fit straight runs, elbows, tees, reducers, flanges, branches, offsets, and rolling offsets as required by the drawing.
• Orient fittings, branches, flanges, bolt holes, and other components to the correct rotation and position.
• Verify flange alignment, face orientation, elevation, overall length, and assembly geometry before tack-up and welding.
• Prepare pipe ends and joints as required, including checking bevels, root openings, hi-low/alignment, cleanliness, and fit-up.
• Use levels, squares, wraparounds, center finders, tape measures, angle-finding tools, and other pipe-fitting tools accurately.
• Tack pipe and fittings securely while maintaining required dimensions and alignment.
• Verify material identification, component size, schedule/thickness, fitting type, and drawing revision before assembly.
• Verify material heat numbers and maintain heat-number traceability throughout fabrication, ensuring required heat numbers are accurately recorded and match the material being used before components are incorporated into an assembly.
• Follow safe practices for rigging, lifting, clamping, grinding, torch work, and tack welding.
• Identify drawing conflicts, incorrect material, dimensional problems, or fit-up issues and obtain clarification before proceeding.
• Coordinate closely with pipe welders so joints are properly prepared, accessible, aligned, and ready to weld.
• Maintain accurate fabrication while working efficiently to support shop production.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous pipe fitting or pipe fabrication experience preferred.
• Ability to read pipe isometrics, spool drawings, and fabrication drawings.
• Working knowledge of pipe sizes, schedules, fittings, flanges, takeouts, offsets, and common pipe-fabrication terminology.
• Demonstrated ability to perform pipe layout, dimensional calculations, and accurate fit-up.
• Basic tack-welding ability is preferred where required for fitting operations.
• Ability to use pipe-fitting, layout, and measuring tools safely and accurately.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Strong math, measurement, and spatial-reasoning skills.
• Ability to calculate and lay out offsets and rolling offsets accurately.
• Ability to visualize fitting rotation and assembly orientation from an isometric or fabrication drawing.
• High attention to flange orientation, bolt-hole position, centerlines, elevations, and cumulative dimensions.
• Ability to recognize when a dimension, fitting, or material does not match the drawing before it becomes part of the assembly.
• Clear communication with pipe welders, supervision, material handling, and Quality personnel.

SAFETY & QUALITY EXPECTATIONS

• Regularly stand, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and work around pipe racks and fabricated assemblies.
• Handle fitting tools, clamps, pipe components, and related equipment within safe working limits.
• Work around cranes, forklifts, welding, grinding, torch cutting, heat, noise, fumes, and other fabrication-shop conditions.
• Must be able to wear required PPE and safely work around pipe and heavy fabrication materials.

PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Verify material, fitting type, size/schedule, drawing revision, and orientation before assembly.
• Maintain accurate joint preparation and alignment so the welder receives a properly fitted joint.
• Do not compensate for incorrect drawings, material, or dimensions by forcing an assembly together; obtain clarification.
• Protect material identification and maintain an organized fabrication area.

• Pay is dependent on experience, skills, and qualifications. Insurance benefits are available after successful completion of the probationary period.
