Policy Strategist, Kids and Families

Trust & Safety team members are tasked with identifying and taking on the biggest problems that challenge the safety and integrity of our products. They use technical know-how, excellent problem-solving skills, user insights, and proactive communication to protect users and our partners from abuse across Google products like Search, Maps, Gmail, and Google Ads. On this team, you're a big-picture thinker and strategic team-player with a passion for doing what’s right. You work globally and cross-functionally with Google engineers and product managers to identify and fight abuse and fraud cases at Google speed - with urgency. As a Policy Strategist, you will serve as a primary domain authority and strategic lead for kids and teens content safety. You will handle novel, highly ambiguous policy challenges spanning generative AI, emerging product capabilities and interactions, and age-appropriate content ecosystem risks.

In this role, you will lead proactive policy formulation, partner with Engineering and Product Management to embed safety-by-design into product roadmaps, and serve as a senior escalation lead on critical issues. Your work will be grounded in research-based age-appropriate developmental needs of kids and teens. This role requires exceptional judgment, strong cross-functional influence, and the ability to turn complex academic research and global safety regulations into scalable policy frameworks.

A team of Analysts, Policy Specialists, Engineers, and Program Managers, we work to reduce risk and fight abuse across all of Google’s products, protecting our users, advertisers, and publishers across the globe in over 40 languages.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $164000 - $239000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities:

• Drive the development and iteration of comprehensive, research-grounded policies and strategies that ensure Google's products offer age-appropriate experiences to protect people from harmful content.
• Serve as a senior escalation authority for critical, high-visibility policy issues, translating acute incidents into long-term systemic fixes.
• Partner as the primary safety advisor to Product Managers, UX Designers, and SWE leads to embed safety-by-design principles into product roadmaps and ensure safety before launch.
• Track industry and social trends, analyze policy issues facing technology platforms, make recommendations on how to address these challenges across multiple Google products.
• Work with sensitive content or situations and may be exposed to graphic, controversial, and/or upsetting topics or content.

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  
• 7 years of experience in a policy, legal, trust and safety, or technology environment.
• Experience working with AI-related policy issues in child safety, online harms, or age-appropriate product design.

Preferred qualifications:

• Advanced degree in an academic field focused on pediatric or adolescent development, child protection policy, or the psychological impact of digital products on children and youth.
• 8 years of experience in child or adolescent development, such as through working directly with people, advocating for children’s rights, or advanced degrees in developmental psychology.
• Ability to translate complex issues into simple and clear language, collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, and navigate organizational boundaries.
• Ability to influence director-level product and engineering stakeholders without formal authority.
• Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills with attention to detail in an ever-changing environment.
