Job Description

The purpose of the Project Manager is to lead the planning and execution of capital, infrastructure and Care & Maintenance projects within Venetia Underground Project (VUP), Care & Maintenance (C&M), and special project workstreams, ensuring safe, efficient and compliant delivery aligned to the integrated business plan. 

The role is accountable for end-to-end project delivery across engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover phases, ensuring achievement of approved scope, schedule, cost, quality and operational objectives. 

The role provides integration between project stakeholders, contractors, operations, engineering, supply chain and project controls to ensure delivery readiness and sustainable operational outcomes.

TYPICAL TASKS  

Safety, Legal Compliance & Risk Management 

• Develop and execute project execution plans.  

• Manage projects across engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning phases.  

• Deliver approved scope within cost, schedule and quality targets.  

• Coordinate project interfaces across operational and project teams.  

• Manage project stage-gate and governance requirements.  

• Drive project execution and delivery readiness. 

Project Planning & Execution 

• Develop and execute project execution plans.  

• Manage projects across engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning phases.  

• Deliver approved scope within cost, schedule and quality targets.  

• Coordinate project interfaces across operational and project teams.  

• Manage project stage-gate and governance requirements.  

• Drive project execution and delivery readiness. 

Design & Scope Management 

• Ensure designs are clear, complete and executable. 

• Coordinate design inputs and resolve technical gaps. 

• Validate execution readiness of project scope prior to delivery. 

• Ensure alignment between design, scope and operational requirements. 

• Manage scope development and scope changes. 

Procurement & Commercial Management 

• Support development of procurement strategies. 

• Manage long-lead equipment and critical procurement packages. 

• Monitor supplier and vendor performance. 

• Support contract administration and commercial reviews. 

• Evaluate variation requests and contractor claims. 

• Ensure timely delivery of materials and services. 

Construction & Delivery Management 

• Manage construction, installation and commissioning activities.  

• Ensure compliance with quality, safety and technical requirements.  

• Coordinate contractors and site execution teams.  

• Monitor construction progress and productivity.  

• Manage shutdown and brownfield execution activities.  

• Lead project handover to operations. 

Contractor & Resource Management 

• Manage contractor performance and delivery.  

• Ensure resources are aligned to project requirements.  

• Monitor contractor compliance and productivity.  

• Drive accountability across project teams.  

• Coordinate specialist resources where required. 

Project Controls & Performance 

• Manage project cost, schedule and scope performance.  

• Support budgeting, forecasting and cashflow planning.  

• Review project controls reports and forecasts.  

• Implement corrective actions for performance deviations.  

• Ensure accurate reporting and governance compliance.  

• Support project risk, change and contingency management. 

 

Qualifications

• Grade 12 / Equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification. 

• Degree or National Diploma in Engineering, Mining, Construction or related discipline. 

• Project Management qualification (advantageous). 

• Valid driver’s licence. 

• Medical fitness to work in a mining environment. 

Experience & Knowledge required:  

• 5–10 years’ experience in project, construction or engineering environments within mining or heavy industry. 

• Experience working within capital project environments (VUP, infrastructure or similar scale projects). 

• Demonstrated ability to deliver projects within defined cost, schedule and scope constraints. 

Proven experience in:  

• Project execution and delivery (construction, infrastructure, capital projects). 

• Contractor and site management. 

• Project planning, scheduling and coordination. 

• Commissioning and operational handover. 

Strong working knowledge of:  

• Project management principles and methodologies. 

• Mining, engineering and construction systems. 

• Safety, regulatory and compliance requirements in mining environments. 

• Risk management and change control processes.
