What you'll do

  • Research real and personal property tax bills on county, city, township, school district, and other taxing authority websites.
  • Contact tax assessors, collectors, treasurers, and other jurisdiction representatives by phone or email to obtain missing bills, confirm balances, verify due dates, resolve account questions, and request supporting documentation.
  • Enter, update, and maintain property, assessment, bill, payment, notice, and jurisdiction information in Property Tax software.
  • Review tax bill details for accuracy, including taxpayer name, parcel or account number, property location, tax year, assessed value, amount due, installment schedule, due date, and payment status.
  • Upload and organize tax bills, assessment notices, payment confirmations, correspondence, and other supporting documents in the appropriate system records.
  • Monitor assigned work queues and reports to identify missing bills, unresolved exceptions, approaching due dates, duplicate records, and incomplete account information.
  • Follow up on outstanding property tax bills and document all research, telephone calls, correspondence, and resolution steps in a clear and consistent manner.
  • Assist with preparing tax bills for review and payment by confirming required documentation, coding, due dates, payee information, and payment method.
  • Coordinate with offshore team members, third-party vendors, taxing jurisdictions, and internal business partners to support property tax bill research, payment processing activities, data maintenance, issue resolution, and compliance with established procedures and deadlines.
  • Manage relationships with property tax appeal consultants by providing supporting documentation, monitoring appeal assignments and deadlines, tracking outcomes, maintaining records, and escalating critical issues or risks to management as needed.
  • Maintain supporting documentation and an audit trail in accordance with departmental procedures and internal control requirements.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business Administration, Real Estate, Economics, or related field required; advanced tax education, valuation coursework, or relevant certification preferred.
  • One to three years of experience in tax, accounting, accounts payable, research, compliance, or a similar administrative or analytical role preferred.
  • Experience researching information through government or jurisdiction websites and communicating professionally by telephone and email.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including sorting, filtering, lookups, and basic data reconciliation; proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to review account numbers, parcel numbers, dates, amounts, and supporting documents accurately.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, maintain organized records, and follow through on open items.

Property Tax Analyst

Position Summary

The Tax Analyst supports the day-to-day administration of real and personal property tax obligations. This position researches tax bills through jurisdiction websites and direct outreach, maintains accurate records in Property Tax Software, communicates with taxing authorities, and coordinates documentation and status updates with external property tax appeal consultants. The position also works closely with a third-party service provider responsible for processing most property tax payments and collaborates extensively with offshore team members located in India. The role requires strong organization, timely follow-through, attention to detail, cross-cultural communication, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines across numerous jurisdictions and time zones. 

Essential Job Functions 

  • Research real and personal property tax bills on county, city, township, school district, and other taxing authority websites.

  • Assist with assessment notice review, tax bill reconciliations, payment research, refund research, and special property tax projects. 
  • Prepare Excel schedules, status reports, and supporting documentation for management review. 
  • Respond to routine property tax questions from internal departments and external contacts, or route complex matters to the appropriate team member. 
  • Work collaboratively with property tax team members, Accounts Payable, Real Estate, Property Management, Fixed Assets, Finance, and external service providers. 
  • Support continuous improvement efforts related to document intake, data quality, workflow standardization, reporting, and use of Avalara Property Tax. 
  • Perform other tax-related duties and projects as assigned. 

Education and Qualifications
