About this role

Join Our Team at the Centre for Disruptive Photonic Technologies (CDPT) and the National Centre for Advanced Integrated Photonics (NCAIP), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

A Research Fellow / Research Engineer position is currently available across the Centre for Disruptive Photonic Technologies (CDPT) and the National Centre for Advanced Integrated Photonics (NCAIP), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

The Research Fellow (Project Leader) will integrate Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors (SNSPDs) with state-of-the-art quantum Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs). The role will scale and advance the fabrication, testing, and packaging workflows for waveguide-integrated SNSPDs, with the goal of developing a commercially-viable single-photon detection system prototype. The position combines device development with exploration of use cases and pathways to commercialization, and directly supports NTU’s mission to develop and commercialize emerging quantum computing and networking technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

As an integral part of the project, the Research Fellow is expected to:

  • Design PIC components and integrate SNSPDs with photonic integrated circuits.

  • Scale and optimize fabrication and cryogenic testing workflows.

  • Characterize detector and system performance, including detection efficiency, dark count rate, timing jitter, and yield.

  • Develop packaging solutions compatible with the cryogenic environment, and manage and document process, design, and measurement data.

  • Operate and maintain research laboratories, including cryostats and optical setups, in compliance with safety and laboratory protocols.

  • Participate in the Venture Creation Program and pilot tests with research groups and industry partners, and explore potential use cases for the developed prototype.

  • Contribute to progress reports, IP disclosures, grant proposals, and disseminate results through publications and at international conferences.

Job Requirements:

The applicant should:

  • Hold a Ph.D. or Doctorate in Physics, Optical/Photonic Engineering, Electronic or Semiconductor Engineering, Information Science, or closely related disciplines.

  • Have relevant research or industrial experience in one or more of the following: semiconductor/superconductor nanofabrication processes (thin-film deposition, photo- and electron-beam lithography, and etching); design and testing of cryogenic (< 10 K) electronic devices (e.g. superconducting devices, cryo-CMOS); or heterogeneous integration.

  • Preferably be familiar with single-photon detection, heterogeneous integration, and quantum technologies concepts.

  • Preferably have experience with photonic device/circuit design and simulation tools (e.g. Lumerical, Ansys, or similar).

  • Have competence in data acquisition/analysis and scripting for instrument control (e.g. Python/MATLAB/LabVIEW).

  • Demonstrate the ability to work both independently and within a collaborative research team, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.

NTU seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
