Your first full-time teaching role matters more than most people tell you. The school you choose will shape your practice, your confidence, and your sense of what teaching can actually be. Not every school is worth that investment of yourself. This one is.

This is a special school in Twickenham supporting young people aged 7 to 19 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. A significant number of pupils also have a diagnosis of Autism, ADHD, or both. All hold an EHCP. Many carry histories that mainstream education was not equipped to hold. ECTs who come here are not thrown in and left to hope. They are supported from day one by an experienced team, a present leadership team, and a school culture where staff genuinely look out for each other. If you are an experienced primary teacher considering a move into specialist education, this role is open to you too. But if you are at the start of your career and want to get it right from the beginning, this is the place to read carefully.

The Setting

The school operates on a clear set of priorities. Emotional safety comes first. Relationships are built before anything academic is asked of a young person. Progress is real and measurable here, but it starts with a pupil feeling genuinely known by the adults around them.

Pupils present with a range of needs. SEMH is the primary diagnosis across the school. Alongside that, many pupils also have Autism / ASC or ADHD, or both. Some have experienced significant adverse life events. Others present with complex trauma, high anxiety, or dysregulation that made a traditional school environment unworkable for them. The adults who thrive here are those who already understand that behaviour carries meaning, and who are curious about what that meaning is.

What the Role Involves

You will teach in a small class with a high adult-to-pupil ratio and strong TA support. The curriculum is adapted to meet each pupil at their actual stage of development. You will have the freedom to shape your teaching to your pupils' needs rather than around a rigid structure.

Some days, the work is about academic progress. Other days, it is about co-regulation, connection, and helping a young person get through the day feeling safe. Both matter equally here.

ECTs completing their induction will be supported fully, with mentoring, CPD, and a team that takes your development seriously. Experienced primary teachers making the move into specialist education will be given the time and training to make that transition well.

Who This Role Suits

You do not need a specialist SEMH background to apply. You do need to be genuinely open to it.

• Holds QTS with primary training
• Is calm and consistent, particularly when a young person is not
• Understands that behaviour carries meaning and is curious about what that meaning is
• Is open to trauma-informed and relational approaches, or has already begun developing them
• Wants to work somewhere they will be developed and valued over the long term
• Is looking for a permanent role where they can settle and grow
