What you'll do

  • Serve as a working-level subject-matter expert on industry-standard digital design platforms and workflows (Revit, Rhino, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, and comparable tools), providing that context to Software as input for feature and product decisions.
  • Own execution and day-to-day evolution of the digital design integrations, families, plugins, scripts, or platform-specific data structures, that surface ICON's building products inside design platforms, within the architecture set by ICON's Product Roadmap; escalate recommendations for architectural changes as they arise.
  • Build and maintain LLM-driven or agentic tooling within design tools (e.g., BIM plugins, internal design-automation scripts, proof-of-concept prototypes), scoped to ICON's internal design environment; tools that mature into customer-facing product features hand off to Software.
  • Define and maintain design rulesets and BIM input parameters that Software builds against; resolve edge cases escalated from contributors.
  • Establish and maintain QA and validation protocols for released design integrations, including versioned releases and regression coverage.
  • Review building product requirements from domain technical leads (Structures, Enclosure & Building Science, and other Product Development domains) and identify resulting revisions or additions needed to design integrations and tooling to support those products; resolving gaps in documentation prior to handoff to Software for implementation.
  • Partner with the Software team on features requiring deep BIM and computational-geometry input, contributing technical specifications and implementation-level review; flag cross-functional roadmap tradeoffs to the domain's Technical Lead and Product Owners as they arise.
  • Work directly with ICON's product team to identify hardware technology requirements that need to be surfaced within the design space through design integrations and their underlying data.
  • Coordinate testing of the Software team's implementation of building products with the relevant domain technical leads.
  • Proactively engage in technical discovery with internal and customer-facing teams, translating observed friction in the BIM-to-fabrication workflow into candidate product requirements for the domain's Technical Lead and Product Owners to prioritize.
  • Author and maintain technical reference documentation and usage standards for the domain's design integrations and tooling.
  • Identify and propose new tool or process integrations, including physical-to-digital and digital-to-physical bridging opportunities, bringing recommendations to department leadership for prioritization.

What they're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Building Science, Computer Science, or a related field with a strong technical focus.
  • 8+ years of related experience in BIM-driven design, design-to-fabrication workflows, or construction technology platforms; or 6+ years with a Master's; or 3+ years with a Ph.D.
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit and complementary BIM/CAD authoring tools, with a demonstrated track record of shipping design integrations (families, plugins, or scripts) into production use.
  • Demonstrated software delivery experience, including shipping internal tools or platform features against a release cadence.
  • Strong understanding of construction and design industry practices, including structural systems, architectural design, and construction sequencing.
  • Proven ability to translate architectural and building-science requirements into technical specifications for software collaboration.

Nice to have

  • Depth in computational geometry and BIM interoperability — NURBS, BREP, IFC schema authoring, or comparable frameworks.
  • Experience productizing construction elements and translating bespoke design intent into reproducible, validated platform components.
  • Background in 3D printing, robotics, or advanced manufacturing technologies applied to construction.
  • Exposure to physical-to-digital data pipelines (e.g., LiDAR-to-model workflows, computer vision) as a plus signal for the domain's physical-digital bridging work.
  • Cloud-native automation or platform architecture literacy (e.g., APS/AWS-style pipelines).
  • Exposure to AI-augmented engineering tooling (agentic coding assistants, MCP-based integrations) evaluated within a specific design workflow, rather than as a company-wide strategy mandate.

Full description from employer

ICON is seeking a Sr. Design Technologist to build the tooling and data structures that streamline the use of ICON's building products and system capabilities inside the design platforms customers and internal teams use, Revit and comparable BIM/CAD environments. This role increasingly applies LLM-driven and agentic tooling within the design environment to streamline how design intent translates into an ICON-compatible design, executing within an architecture set by ICON's Product Roadmap.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide regular progress and status updates on design integrations, tooling, and ruleset work to department and product leadership.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
