Job Description Summary

The energy transition is driving unprecedented growth in electricity demand and transmission capacity. To support this growth, HVDC transmission systems will play a critical role in connecting remote and offshore renewables, interconnecting energy markets, and reinforcing AC grids. Converter stations rely on advanced control and protection systems to ensure efficient, safe, and reliable operation of power electronic valves and associated equipment.

GE Vernova’s Grid Systems Integration business is looking for an experienced Senior Engineer - HVDC Control & Protection System Application to join the HVDC NPI team. This is a senior technical role for an engineer who can act as a trusted consultant and technical authority, supporting the development and application of advanced HVDC control and protection solutions. You will help strengthen design practices, lead complex technical improvements, support technical governance, and contribute to the long-term evolution of HVDC control and protection technology.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

• Act as a recognised technical authority in HVDC control and protection solutions, providing support to senior leadership and consulting engineers
• Approve designs, review execution plans, and support engineering teams in delivering robust, high-quality technical solutions
• Support the development and maintenance of the HVDC Control & Protection Algorithms technology roadmap and identify areas for technical advancement
• Drive internal and external standardisation activities, including representation in IEC, CIGRE, and similar professional bodies
• Participate in patent evaluation and support the protection of innovation and intellectual property
• Oversee R&D programmes from concept through industrialisation and promote collaboration across GE Vernova businesses
• Support project tendering, delivery, quality reviews, and root cause analysis for major technical issues
• Mentor engineering talent, reinforce good engineering practice, and support technical governance across the organisation

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or a related field focused on control system development, ideally with a power systems focus
• Experience leading technical teams to deliver high-quality outputs to business deadlines
• Experience producing high-quality requirements, design, and test specification documents
• Strong experience developing control and protection solutions using model-based design practices in MATLAB/Simulink
• Experience conducting EMT studies for power systems
• Strong technical understanding of HVDC control and protection technology, particularly in high-availability, real-time, flexible control systems
• Deep knowledge of control algorithm principles, implementation and integration, control software architecture, interaction studies, grid forming control, and control system verification and validation
• Willingness to travel occasionally for business

Preferred Experience

• Worked with multi-terminal HVDC systems
• PSCAD simulation software
• Expertise in HVDC control and protection solutions
