SENIOR ESTIMATOR

Price the opportunity. Understand the risk. Help secure the projects that build Alfabs’ future.

Alfabs Engineering & Services isn’t just another contractor in the market. As the flagship division of the ASX-listed Alfabs Group, we deliver complex engineering, fabrication and construction solutions across some of Australia’s most demanding industries — including infrastructure, mining, energy and construction.

And we’re growing.

As our project pipeline and capability continue to expand, we’re looking for an experienced Senior Estimator to join our team and play a key role in identifying, developing and securing the next generation of major projects for Alfabs Engineering & Services.

This is more than simply producing estimates.

Working closely with our Business Development & Engineering teams you’ll take ownership of complex tenders and help develop commercially sound, technically robust and competitive submissions. You’ll be involved from the early stages of an opportunity — understanding the scope, developing the estimate, identifying risk, testing methodology and challenging assumptions — right through to tender submission, negotiation, handover and post-project review.

You’ll have genuine input into what we pursue, how we price it, how we manage the risk and how we position Alfabs to win.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As Senior Estimator, you’ll work across a diverse portfolio of opportunities, including major projects typically within the $10M–$40M range.

You’ll work with Estimating Team and wider business to develop accurate, competitive and deliverable estimates while ensuring tenders are compliant, commercially considered and submitted on time.

This role suits an estimator who has built strong technical and commercial capability and is ready to take greater ownership of complex tenders, contribute to bid strategy and become a trusted senior member of the estimating function.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinate the preparation of detailed, accurate and commercially sound estimates and tender submissions for complex engineering and construction projects.
  • Review drawings, specifications, scopes and tender documentation to develop detailed labour, material, plant, subcontractor and project cost estimates.
  • Work with the Estimating Team to manage tender activities, priorities and workloads, ensuring compliant, high-quality submissions are delivered on time.
  • Partner with the Business Development Manager to review new opportunities, contribute to Go/No-Go assessments, and develop competitive tender strategies.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Operations, Projects and Construction teams to develop practical methodologies, resource plans, programs and delivery strategies.
  • Develop subcontract packages and scopes of work, obtain market pricing, and critically assess supplier and subcontractor submissions.
  • Identify and assess commercial, contractual, technical and delivery risks, including contingencies, qualifications, exclusions and contractual departures.
  • Support client engagement, tender clarifications, negotiations and ECI activities, working with internal stakeholders to strengthen tender outcomes.
  • Maintain tender registers, pipeline and forecasting information, and support the effective handover of successful tenders to Project and Operations teams.
  • Provide guidance to the Estimating Team and drive continuous improvement across the tender lifecycle, including reviewing won/lost tenders and completed projects against estimates to capture lessons learned.

ABOUT YOU

You understand that winning the right work isn't simply about being the cheapest.

It’s about understanding the scope, knowing where the risk sits, developing a realistic delivery strategy and producing an estimate that is both competitive and commercially sustainable.

You’re comfortable getting into the detail, but you can also see the bigger picture.

You can interrogate drawings and specifications, challenge assumptions, assess subcontractor pricing, discuss construction methodology with operational teams and clearly communicate the commercial rationale behind an estimate.

Most importantly, you take ownership.

You’ll ideally bring:

  • 5–7+ years’ estimating experience within construction, engineering, infrastructure, mining or a related heavy industry environment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing detailed estimates for projects in the $10M–$20M+ range, with exposure to projects valued up to approximately $40M.
  • Strong experience developing subcontract packages and scopes of work for market pricing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction methodologies, project delivery and commercial risk.
  • Experience assessing tender opportunities and contributing to Go/No-Go governance decisions.
  • Strong understanding of project risk, contingency development and commercial evaluation.
  • Experience working with Tier 1 clients and ideally exposure to Early Contractor Involvement (ECI).
  • The ability to support, mentor and share knowledge with less experienced members of an Estimating Team.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Construction Management or a relevant trade/technical qualification.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel capability and strong proficiency across Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project.
  • Exceptional written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and multiple major tenders simultaneously.

WHY ALFABS?

People Make Alfabs.

  • We’re an Australian-grown, ASX-listed engineering and manufacturing group with the capability to design it, fabricate it, deliver it, install it and maintain it.
  • We’re continuing to grow our capability, our client base and the scale and complexity of projects we pursue.
  • For the right Senior Estimator, that creates an opportunity to do much more than sit behind a spreadsheet.
  • This role gives you the opportunity to:
  • Take ownership of complex, high-value tenders.
  • Influence how major projects are priced, structured and delivered.
  • Work across major infrastructure, construction, mining and energy opportunities.
  • Contribute directly to tender strategy and Go/No-Go decisions.
  • Work alongside senior leaders, operational specialists and experienced project teams.
  • Engage with Tier 1 clients, subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Help improve and develop Alfabs’ estimating and tendering capability.
  • Mentor and support other estimators as the team continues to grow.
  • See projects through the full tender lifecycle — from initial opportunity to delivery review.
  • Build your career within a growing Australian, ASX-listed engineering and manufacturing group.
  • Access excellent employee rewards and benefits.
