What you'll do

  • The full lifecycle of a feature, including discovery, technical design, implementation, testing, rollout, monitoring, and follow-up
  • Work across our TypeScript and Node.js serverless backend, including Lambda, API Gateway, and SQS, as well as our React Native application
  • Make practical architectural decisions about service boundaries, data ownership, and when to refactor versus extend an existing system.
  • Instrument what you ship and hold the line on stability without slowing releases.
  • Use tools such as Codex, Cursor and Claude Code to move faster while remaining responsible for correctness, testing, and quality.
  • Mentor other engineers through technical design, code review, and cross-stack collaboration.

What they're looking for

  • Proven experience shipping customer-facing products end to end, with meaningful technical and architectural ownership.
  • An AI-native development approach: you use tools such as Claude Code and Cursor throughout planning, implementation, debugging, testing, and review, while applying the judgement needed to validate and own the result.
  • Expert-level TypeScript; fluent in Node, React/React Native, REST/GraphQL.
  • Real AWS serverless experience (Lambda, SQS) or equivalent event-driven systems.
  • Track record refactoring or modernizing existing systems, not just greenfield.
  • Pragmatic testing (Jest, RNTL, Detox) wired into CI.
  • Strong product judgment and clear, even-keeled communication.

Nice to have

  • Experience building financial products, payment systems, or other regulated software.
  • Infrastructure as Code experience with Pulumi or Terraform.
  • Mobile release experience, including TestFlight, Google Play, or over-the-air updates.

About Bree

Bree is a consumer finance platform that brings better, faster, and cheaper financial services to over half the Canadian population who live paycheck to paycheck. We operate in a huge, but overlooked market in a country with the least amount of financial technology innovation in the developed world. Our first act is to become the cheapest and best provider of short-term credit to the 20 million people in Canada who live paycheck to paycheck.

More than 800,000 Canadians have already signed up with Bree and we believe we are just scratching the surface. We are in an exciting place where we have product market fit, explosive growth, and a clear path to becoming one of the most important FinTechs in Canada.

We are now entering a new stage of growth. We are expanding our product across Canada, adapting to new regulatory requirements, modernizing important parts of our platform, and building a stronger foundation for the next generation of Bree products.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Fullstack Engineer to own important product areas from the initial customer problem through production release.

This is not a role where Product defines every requirement and Engineering takes over at implementation. You will work directly with Product, Design, CX, Operations, and other engineers to understand the problem, shape the solution, make technical decisions, and own the outcome after release.

A project might involve designing a new React Native experience, updating eligibility and product rules, introducing new APIs and database models, integrating with a payment provider, building internal tools for CX, and monitoring how the feature performs in production.

You will join a small engineering team working on a product with large scale, and with direct consequences for customers’ access to money. Some parts of our system are modern and well understood. Others reflect the pragmatic decisions of a fast-growing startup and need thoughtful modernization.

Your job is to help us continue moving quickly while making the product easier to understand, safer to change, and more reliable for our customers.
