Senior Software Engineer, Security and Privacy, Detection AI, Core

As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

As a Senior Software Engineer (L5) on the detection and response AI team, you will take end-to-end ownership of different workstreams across the Detection AI space. You will operate with high autonomy, translating ambiguous organizational goals into clear technical roadmaps. You will research, identify, and lead critical problems for the team to solve. Partnering alongside a peer Tech Lead, you will carve out multi-quarter technical initiatives, establish architectural direction, and multiply the output of a talented pool of L3 and L4 engineers.

We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

Responsibilities:

• Scope out problems in detection and response space and enable the organizational strategy to move left in the detection pipeline.
• Set technical direction, author comprehensive design documents, and lead design reviews for complex, multi-quarter features within the team.
• Partner closely with cross-functional peers and sister SWE teams to resolve architectural dependencies and align project timelines.
• Guide, mentor, and delegate tasks to adjacent junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a collaborative engineering culture.

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  
• 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.
• 3 years of experience building software for data privacy or security (e.g., identity and access management).
  
• 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products.
• 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

• 5 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
• 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role.
  
• Experience in security systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
• Experience as a technical lead with a proven track record of leading teams.
• Experienced in navigating high-ambiguity environments and defining technical strategy for engineering teams.
