Our dedicated IT team proudly deliver a personal service to over 1500 IT users. They’re busy implementing cutting-edge cloud-based technology, ensuring technological evolution, compliance, security and excellent customer service are consistently met.  

It’s within this dedicated team at Marshalls that we’re recruiting for a Senior SQL Database Administrator who will act as the internal owner for the Marshalls SQL server estate and subject matter expert to stakeholders across IT and the wider business.  
 
So, what’s the mission? 
Working closely with an outsourced Managed Service Provider (MSP), the role will provide technical leadership, governance, service assurance, and strategic and operational direction for all SQL database platforms supporting business-critical applications.  

You will retain ownership of platform performance, resilience, security, compliance, supplier management, and technical roadmaps to ensure database services align with the needs of the business.  

• Act as the technical owner of the SQL Server estate, ensuring database services are secure, resilient, high-performing, and compliant across all environments. 

• Lead and manage the relationship with our Managed Service Provider (MSP), challenging technical recommendations and driving service excellence against agreed SLAs and KPIs. 

• Provide technical oversight and assurance for database upgrades, migrations, security patching, high availability solutions, and disaster recovery activities. 

• Develop and maintain the database platform roadmap, identifying opportunities for optimisation, automation, and modernisation to support business transformation. 

• Monitor service performance, availability, and capacity, driving root cause analysis and long-term improvements for major incidents and recurring issues. 

• Ensure database security and compliance standards are maintained, including access governance, vulnerability remediation, and audit support. 

• Partner with project teams and business stakeholders, providing database expertise for new solutions, ERP initiatives, data analytics, integrations, and complex technical challenges. 

 
What are the mission-critical skills? 

• Significant experience administering Microsoft SQL Server in enterprise environments.  

• Strong understanding of 

• SQL Server architecture  

• High Availability and Disaster Recovery   

• Performance tuning  

• Security and compliance  

• Database lifecycle management  

• Experience working with outsourced managed service providers and governing third-party technical services.  

• Strong understanding of ITIL service management principles.  

• Experience supporting business-critical production systems.  

• Excellent stakeholder management skills.  

Desirable  

• Experience supporting Dynamics 365 or ERP platforms.  

• Experience within manufacturing or industrial environments.  

• Knowledge of, Azure SQL, Azure Data Services, Data Warehousing & Business Intelligence platforms  

• Experience managing technology suppliers and service contracts.  

• Exposure to cloud migrations and platform modernisation programmes.
