Software Engineer - RCL

In alignment with its vision, FairMoney is actively constructing the foremost mobile banking platform and point-of-sale (POS) solution tailored for emerging markets. The journey began with the introduction of a digital microcredit application exclusively available on Android and iOS devices. Today, FairMoney has significantly expanded its range of services, encompassing a comprehensive suite of financial products, such as current accounts, savings accounts, debit cards, and state-of-the-art POS solutions designed to meet the needs of both merchants and agents.

Role Overview

As an Intermediate Software Engineer (RCL), you will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining reliable backend services that power FairMoney's products and platforms.

You will work closely with other engineers and cross-functional teams to build scalable backend solutions, design robust APIs, work with relational databases, and ensure high standards of code quality and reliability.

This is a remote / in-office role, giving you the flexibility to work remotely while also having the option to work from the office.

Key Responsibilities

Backend Development

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable and reliable backend services.
• Write clean, maintainable, and production-ready code.
• Build and improve backend services that support FairMoney's financial products.
• Work with backend technologies and programming languages such as Golang and Ruby on Rails (RoR).
• Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve technical issues.
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices.

API Design & Integration

• Design, develop, and maintain secure and scalable APIs.
• Ensure APIs are well-structured, documented, reliable, and easy to consume.
• Integrate backend services with internal and external systems.
• Consider performance, security, scalability, and maintainability when designing APIs.

Relational Databases

• Design and work with relational database schemas.
• Work with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL.
• Write efficient SQL queries and optimise database performance.
• Ensure data integrity, consistency, and reliability.
• Identify and resolve database-related performance issues.
• Work with large and growing datasets while considering scalability.

Testing & Quality

• Write and maintain unit and integration tests for backend services.
• Follow strong testing practices to ensure code reliability and prevent regressions.
• Participate in automated testing and continuous integration processes.
• Take ownership of the quality and reliability of the services you build.

AI-Native Development

• Use AI-powered development tools to improve engineering productivity, code quality, debugging, testing, and problem-solving.
• Apply prompt engineering techniques to effectively work with AI tools for software development.
• Stay up to date with emerging AI-assisted software engineering practices and incorporate relevant tools into your workflow.

Collaboration & Ownership

• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Data, and other teams to understand requirements and deliver effective technical solutions.
• Participate in technical planning, design discussions, and architecture decisions.
• Proactively identify technical improvements and contribute to the evolution of FairMoney's engineering practices.
• Take ownership of assigned projects from development through deployment and maintenance.

Requirements

• 3–4 years of professional backend software engineering experience.
• Strong experience building and maintaining backend applications and services.
• Strong experience with backend programming languages such as Golang and/or Ruby on Rails (RoR).
• Solid experience working with relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL and/or MySQL.
• Strong understanding and practical experience with API design and development.
• Strong testing discipline, including experience with unit and integration testing.
• Ability to write clean, maintainable, scalable, and well-tested code.
• Good understanding of software engineering principles, data structures, and algorithms.
• Experience with Git and modern software development workflows.
• Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment.
• Experience working with AI development tools and prompt engineering is a plus.
• Experience with fintech, banking, lending, or other financial products is a plus.

Nice to Have

• Experience in lending, credit, payments, or another regulated financial domain.
• Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging systems, and asynchronous processing at scale.
• Experience working with high-volume transactional systems.
• Experience with observability and performance monitoring tools.
• Experience working with distributed or highly scalable systems.
• Experience using AI tools as part of day-to-day software development.
