What you'll do

  • Own the end-to-end investigation of field-reported issues across the AirLink wireless router platform family — replicating problems in-house, identifying root causes, engaging development teams to drive corrective action, and developing practical workarounds to keep customers operational in the interim
  • Leverage a strong diagnostic toolkit — bash and Python scripting, device logs, configuration databases, and IP packet captures — to extract meaningful signal from field devices, turning raw data into clear, actionable insights for both troubleshooting and platform analysis
  • Serve as the technical escalation point from complex requests from sales and field support teams, providing authoritative guidance on platform behavior, configuration options, and scripted solutions tailored to real customer environments
  • Contribute to system-level design and feature requirement reviews ahead of new platform releases, bringing your field deployment experience and customer knowledge to bear on ensuring new features are practical, robust, and aligned with how our products are actually used
  • Maintain thorough, well-organized documentation in Jira and Confluence — capturing troubleshooting methodologies, implemented workarounds, bug reports, and platform operational insights that strengthen the team’s collective knowledge base
  • Partner with internal customer-facing teams to gather and communicate critical information on customer issues and requests, actively contributing to a stronger, more capable support organization

What they're looking for

  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent; or Technology Diploma with relevant industry experience
  • A problem-solver’s mindset: you’re energized by diagnosing complex issues in existing systems, driven to find root causes independently, and comfortable operating without a roadmap
  • Methodical approach to analyzing complex problems and system-level troubleshooting
  • 5+ years of Linux system experience with proficiency in shell scripting (bash and Python), configuring firewalls (iptables & nftables), cron jobs, and analyzing IP packet captures
  • 5+ years of networking experience with deep understanding of networking concepts and protocols including IPv4/v6, TCP/UDP, NAT, DHCP, SNMP, PPP, VPN (IPsec, MOBIKE, OpenVPN), BGP, and OSPF
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated; ability to work independently or in small teams and drive issues to resolution without constant direction

Full description from employer

Location: Richmond, BC (hybrid)

Our Team:

Semtech's AirLink Router System Engineering team is a high-performing technical group embedded within the router engineering organization, giving us direct access to the product development engineers who build our platforms from the ground up. We sit at the intersection of deep engineering and real-world deployment — translating complex field challenges into product improvements and delivering engineering-level expertise to our customer-facing teams.

Our products are deployed where reliability isn't optional: public safety and first responder networks, public transit systems, and critical industrial and utility infrastructure. The AirLink portfolio spans simple LTE-A gateways to sophisticated routers featuring dual 5G cellular modems, dual WiFi 6 4x4 MIMO, and out-of-band LPWA management. When these systems need to perform, our team is there to make sure they do.

We're a collaborative, high-trust team that values technical depth, intellectual curiosity, and the satisfaction of solving problems that genuinely matter.

Job Summary:

As a Staff Engineer on the AirLink System Engineering team, you’ll serve as a key technical authority on our wireless router platforms. This role is built for a problem solver at heart — someone who thrives on diagnosing complex, real-world issues with existing systems and tracking down root causes that others can’t find. You’ll bring a methodical, systems-level mindset to the most challenging networking issues our customers face, owning investigations end-to-end from replication through resolution. Beyond troubleshooting, you’ll draw on your deployment knowledge to shape the features and requirements that define our next generation of products.

Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent; or Technology Diploma with relevant industry experience
  • A problem-solver’s mindset: you’re energized by diagnosing complex issues in existing systems, driven to find root causes independently, and comfortable operating without a roadmap
  • Methodical approach to analyzing complex problems and system-level troubleshooting
  • 5+ years of Linux system experience with proficiency in shell scripting (bash and Python), configuring firewalls (iptables & nftables), cron jobs, and analyzing IP packet captures
