This posting is for 7 intern openings across 4 departments. We are looking for Electrical Engineering interns in various departments including System Protection Engineering, Substation Engineering & Design, Substation Communication Engineering and Substation Commissioning Engineering. Below are the typical responsibilities for each group:

System Protection Engineering (3 openings)

- Power system modeling in company short circuit modeling
- Collecting and coordinating event information for On-Call Engineer
- Performing short circuit analysis studies
- Developing relay settings for small capital projects
- Assisting compliance subject matter experts with required documentation

Substation Engineering & Design (1 Opening)

- Support substation design tasks (one-line diagrams, layouts, basic calculations)
- Assist with drawing updates, design packages, and standards documentation
- Perform basic engineering calculations and data validation
- Participate in design reviews and coordination meetings
- Support site visit preparation and documentation (limited field exposure)
- Organize and analyze project data and engineering records

Substation Communication Engineering (2 Openings)

- Learn how Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) are programmed using Distributed Network Protocol (DNP)
- Assist with configuring network settings for substation cyber assets
- Observe and help investigate network event logs
- Gain foundational understanding of the Energy Management System (EMS), system protection concepts, and cybersecurity considerations in electric power operations

Substation Commissioning Engineering (1 Opening)

-Support substation commissioning process tasks to prove the correct operation of substation protection and control schemes
-Develop commissioning test plans (including modeling faults, developing test plans, and verifying test plans in the lab)
-Support commissioning sign off sheet, commissioning report and commissioning artifacts collection and submittals
-Support commissioning schedule management

 

These positions are for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:
- Current student, Freshman or higher

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $21.20 to $24.60 per hour

This position is eligible for the following benefits: Pension, 401(k) plan, Paid time off (PTO), Holidays
