Substitute Teacher

Peabody Overview:

Peabody School was founded in 1994 to “serve the needs of academically advanced children of all backgrounds by promoting cognitive, social, and emotional development for each child at a rate commensurate with his or her ability, while providing a foundation for students to become lifelong learners.” This mission is best embodied in our motto: Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

Peabody enrolls 220 students in grades PreK - 8th grade, and embraces the whole child using a rigorous academics program, including extensive instruction in fine and performing arts, world languages, technology, and physical education. 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities: 

Substitute Teachers are highly valued at Peabody School, as they provide reliable, professional, and age-appropriate supervision and instruction while creating a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment for students.

Substitute Teachers will:

• Respond to substitute requests in a timely manner and attend substitute orientation to learn school procedures and expectations.
• Arrive on time, sign in at the front office, and follow all school arrival procedures.
• Dress in professional, school-appropriate attire.
• Review the classroom teacher's lesson plans in advance, when available, and prepare any necessary materials.
• Carry out lesson plans as provided, presenting instruction and supervising students in accordance with the teacher's plans.
• Foster a safe, positive, and productive learning environment by following school policies and behavior expectations.
• Support students whose behaviors may interfere with learning or relationships, using appropriate strategies and seeking assistance when needed.
• Maintain a clean, organized classroom and ensure materials are cared for appropriately.
• Collect, organize, and leave completed student work for the classroom teacher.
• Communicate clearly with the classroom teacher regarding lesson completion, student progress, behavior, and any necessary adjustments to the lesson plan.
• Promptly inform the classroom teacher and/or the Head of School of any significant concerns, incidents, or safety issues.

Qualifications & Characteristics:

• High School Degree
• Experience working with children
• Flexibility, a good sense of humor, ability to work well with others
• Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Associate’s Degree or higher
• Experience working in a school setting
