About this role

Job Description:

Note: Fidelity will not provide immigration sponsorship for this position.

The Team

The Sustainable Investment Research Team sits within Fidelity Asset Management and focuses on developing differentiated insights by incorporating sustainability factors into security analysis, stewardship, and investment strategies to help clients meet their financial goals.

The Role

In this role the Sustainability Analyst will be responsible for providing sustainable investment research insights and guidance for their assigned industry sectors. This sector coverage includes responsibility for publishing proprietary ESG ratings within assigned industry sectors, engaging companies and issuers on financially material sustainability topics, supporting proxy voting for their sector, and performing thematic research across a variety of sector-relevant sustainability themes. The Sustainability Analyst will proactively respond to sustainable investment research needs across Asset Management from both the traditional and sustainable portfolio managers.

We are seeking candidates who have experience in investing, particularly a proven commitment and passion for the field of sustainable investing, either through asset management or consulting or with relevant technical or analytical background (e.g. environmental engineering or climate science). Our ideal candidate will be a creative problem-solver who is comfortable working with ambiguity and imperfect information, a collaborative teammate, and can be flexible as business needs evolve. Additionally, we are seeking someone who possesses excellent communication, presentation and writing skills and the ability to clearly articulate their research findings while connecting them to financial outcomes or forecasts.

The Value You Deliver

  • Lead ESG ratings coverage and provide sector expertise on financially material sustainability factors, alongside conducting deep thematic research on long-term sustainable risks and opportunities.

  • Lead issuer engagement on financially material sustainability topics while partnering with fundamental analysts and portfolio managers as well as with Investment Proxy Research to inform voting on sustainability topics in support of long-term value creation.

  • Provide dedicated support across sustainable and traditionally managed strategies for security selection, portfolio construction and monitoring.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors’ degree in a relevant field required with advanced degree preferable.

  • 3+ years’ experience in sustainability, investment analysis, research or consulting; background in relevant scientific fields is a significant plus (e.g. environmental science, chemical engineering, earth sciences).

  • Experience with data analysis and financial modelling using Bloomberg, FactSet, and ESG data vendors (MSCI, Sustainalytics, Ravenpack, ISS, etc.).

  • Experience with global ESG frameworks and their application to investment processes (ISSB/SASB, CDP, TCFD, SFDR, etc.).

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with a passion for sustainability topics.

  • Quantitative mindset with experience in sourcing, manipulating and presenting data from traditional and nontraditional sources.

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present effectively to a wide variety of audiences. An important form of communication will be one-on-one (in-person or virtual) discussions, supplemented by written reports, Teams messages, slide decks/presentations, and emails as needed.

  • Demonstrated thematic research expertise, tied to investment themes (climate, corporate governance, water, human capital, etc.).

  • Ability to work independently and handle unstructured tasks while coordinating multiple simultaneous projects and deliverables on tight timelines.

  • A collaborative mentality that can deliver impact in a team-based, results-oriented environment.

  • Self-awareness and self-confidence to build conviction in research and ideas, comfort defending non-consensus views while also being comfortable “being wrong.”
