Position Summary:

The Teaching Assistant will support the delivery of INSY 669/670 (Text Analytics) and RETL 613, with responsibilities focused on both technical and instructional support. Duties will include assisting students with Python programming, data preparation, text analytics, natural language processing, and the application of analytical methods to business and retail problems.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Holding office hours and responding to student questions related to course concepts, assignments, and technical implementation.
  • Supporting students with Python coding, debugging, data collection and preparation, and the implementation of text analytics and NLP methods covered in the courses.
  • Assisting with course exercises and applications involving text preprocessing, sentiment analysis, classification, similarity and recommendation methods, clustering/topic modeling, language models, and related analytical techniques.
  • Providing technical support for course assignments and projects, including troubleshooting packages, notebooks, datasets, and computing environments.
  • Assisting the instructor with grading assignments, projects, and other course deliverables using established grading rubrics and providing constructive feedback to students.
  • Reviewing assignment instructions, notebooks, datasets, and other course materials to identify technical issues or ambiguities before their release to students.
  • Supporting in-class exercises, demonstrations, and hands-on activities as needed.
  • Assisting student teams with the analytical and technical aspects of course projects while ensuring that support is consistent across teams and does not substitute for students' own work.
  • Helping maintain course materials and communications on myCourses and coordinating with the instructor regarding recurring student questions or areas requiring additional clarification.

Qualifications:

The TA is expected to have strong Python skills and familiarity with data analytics and machine learning. Prior experience with text analytics, NLP, language models, or related methods is particularly desirable. Must be McGill graduate student with appropriate course background.
