TERMS OF REFERENCE (TOR) : Vet. Technician : Wildlife

1.      Position Title: Veterinary Technician : Wildlife

2.      Reports to: Lead Veterinarian /

3.      Location: Obudu- Utanga, Nigeria

4.      Duration: Full-time

A.        Purpose & Objective

The Veterinary Technician provides clinical, diagnostic, and operational support to ensure high standards of animal healthcare, welfare, and treatment management across surgical, emergency, and routine procedures.

1.        Key Responsibilities & Duties

a.        Clinical & Patient Care

                                             I.            Administer prescribed medications, vaccinations, fluids, and treatments under veterinary supervision.

                                           II.            Monitor patient vital signs, prepare animals for surgical procedures, and assist with anesthesia induction and maintenance.

                                          III.            Perform routine nursing care, wound dressing, bandage application, and post-operative recovery monitoring.

b.       Diagnostics & Laboratory

                                             I.            Collect, prepare, and process biological samples (blood, urine, feces, tissue) for laboratory testing.

                                           II.            Operate and maintain diagnostic imaging equipment (X-ray, ultrasound) while practicing standard safety protocols.

                                         III.            Maintain clear and accurate medical records and diagnostic logs.

c.       Surgical & Equipment Support

                                             I.            Sterilize, maintain, and inventory surgical instruments, medical devices, and clinic equipment.

                                           II.            Prepare surgical suites, ensuring strict adherence to aseptic techniques.

d.       Facility & Administrative Support

                                             I.            Maintain clean, sanitized, and well-organized treatment areas, cages, and holding facilities.

                                           II.            Monitor inventory levels for pharmaceuticals, supplies, and medical equipment; report shortages promptly.

                                          III.            Educate clients and animal handlers on post-treatment care, nutrition, and preventive healthcare

B.        Required Qualifications & Experience

                           i.          Education 

a.       Associate or bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology or in a  related Animal Health field.

                                ii.            Certification 

                              iii.            Valid License / Registration as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, RVT, LVT, or local equivalent)

                              iv.            Experience      

a.        Minimum 2–3 years of practical clinical or field experience in veterinary healthcare.

C.       Skills

a.       Animal handling/restraint, venipuncture, anesthesia monitoring, and lab diagnostic techniques. 

D.      Key Competencies

                                                         i.            Strong knowledge of animal biology, medical terminology, and pharmacology.

                                                        ii.            Proficiency in emergency triage, patient assessment, and infection control.

                                                      iii.            Excellent communication and record-keeping skills.

                                                      iv.            Ability to handle physically demanding tasks and stressful clinical situations
