Join a Team That's Redefining Underwriting Support!

Looking for more than just an admin role?

Want to build a career where you can develop new skills, work with experienced professionals, and play a genuine part in helping a growing business succeed?

At Markel, we're creating something different.

We're hiring three Underwriting Support Assistants to join our Leeds-based Commercial Lines business. These are brand-new positions within a newly transformed team that sits at the heart of our underwriting operation.

Whether you have experience in insurance, banking, financial services, customer service, administration, or you're looking to take the next step in your career, we'd love to hear from you.

Why This Role?

This isn't a traditional administration position.

You'll be part of a team that enables our Underwriters to focus on what they do best by delivering high-quality operational and underwriting support across a diverse range of specialist insurance products.

You'll work closely with Underwriters, Claims, Finance and Brokers, gaining exposure to the wider insurance market while developing valuable technical and commercial skills.

Most importantly, you'll join a manager who is passionate about developing people and creating genuine career opportunities.

What You'll Be Doing:

No two days are exactly the same.

You'll provide essential support across new business and renewal activities, helping ensure our customers and brokers receive outstanding service.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Working with teams across underwriting, claims and finance

  • Finding opportunities to improve processes and ways of working

  • Supporting projects and wider business initiatives

You'll receive comprehensive training and gradually build your knowledge across multiple areas of the business.

What We're Looking For:

We're far more interested in your attitude, curiosity and willingness to learn than whether you've worked in insurance before.

We're looking for people who:

  • Take pride in producing accurate work

  • Enjoy being organised and managing multiple priorities

  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Are confident learning new systems and technology

  • Take ownership and see tasks through to completion

  • Ask questions and enjoy learning

  • Spot problems and look for solutions

  • Deliver great customer service

  • Work well as part of a team

  • Embrace change and continuous improvement

  • Graduate or Early Career Talent

If you've demonstrated strong customer service, organisation, attention to detail and a proactive outlook, we want to hear from you.

What You'll Gain:

This role offers far more than day-to-day administration.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Learn how underwriting and insurance businesses operate

  • Develop technical insurance knowledge

  • Build relationships with experienced Underwriters

  • Gain exposure to multiple product lines and business functions

  • Undertake professional development opportunities

  • Explore future careers within Underwriting, Claims, Operations and other specialist teams

  • Access internal development and progression pathways across Markel

About the Team:

You'll join a collaborative and supportive team that's currently going through an exciting transformation.

The team is moving towards a fully cross-skilled model, giving everyone the opportunity to learn new areas of the business and build broader experience.

It's an environment where people support one another, share knowledge and enjoy coming to work. As Emma, the Team Manager, continues to shape and grow the function, you'll have the opportunity to help influence the future of the team.

Hybrid Working:

  • 3 days per week in our Leeds office

  • 2 days working from home

  • Team office days are Tuesday and Wednesday

  • During your initial onboarding period, you'll spend more time in the office to ensure you receive the best possible training and support
