The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises seven non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes belong to the Leibniz Association.

WIAS invites applications for a

PhD student position (f/m/d)

in the Research Group “Nonsmooth Variational Problems and Operator Equations”

(Head: Prof. Dr. Micheal Hintermüller) to be filled at the earliest possible date.

This position offers the opportunity for independent scientific research aimed at advancing your own academic qualifications.

Field of work: Optimization or inverse problems with partial differential equations with specialization in one or several of the following fields:

Problems associated with:

• artificial intelligence and machine learning,
• nonsmooth components,
• uncertainties or stochastic influences.

The position is dedicated to the analysis of these problems as well as the design and implementation of efficient algorithms for their solution.

We are looking for: A highly motivated, outstanding student with a master’s degree in mathematics. A strong background in mathematical optimization and good experience with the theory and numerical methods for partial differential equations are required.

The appointment is limited to three years. The reduced work schedule is 29.25 hours per week, and the salary is according to the German TVoeD Bund scale.
