About this role

The Theory of Chiral Quantum Materials Group (https://www.mpi-halle.mpg.de/theory-of-chiral-quantum-material) at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics invites applications for a postdoc position in theoretical and computational quantum materials.

The position is funded through the DFG Cluster of Excellence Center for Chiral Electronics (https://www.chiralelectronics.de/) and available from October 1st, 2026 on.

The project explores how chirality, magnetism, and band topology shape electronic states, spin and orbital transport, and emergent functionalities in quantum materials. The successful candidate will use theoretical and computational approaches to investigate chiral and topological materials, quantum transport, and molecule-material interfaces. Particular research topics include spin and orbital textures, chirality-dependent quantum transport, interfacial charge transfer, and enantioselective molecular adsorption.

The project combines first-principles electronic-structure calculations, Wannier-based modeling, symmetry analysis, quantum-transport theory, and surface and interface calculations. Close collaboration with experimental and theoretical groups within the Center for Chiral Electronics and with partner groups across Europe is envisioned.

We offer:

• An international research environment at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics

• Integration into the interdisciplinary and multi-institutional CCE network

• Close collaboration with experimental research groups

• International visibility and participation in joint workshops and conferences Requirements

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field. Experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable:

• Density functional theory and electronic-structure calculations

• Wannier-based methods and quantum transport theory, such as Kubo or non-equilibrium Green’s-function approaches

• Topological or chiral quantum materials and symmetry analysis

• Surface and interface modeling, such as molecular adsorption and charge transfer

• Scientific programming and numerical modeling

Candidates do not need to have experience in all of these areas. Applicants with a strong background in electronic-structure calculations and an interest in learning quantum transport or molecule-surface modeling are especially encouraged to apply.

Appointment and conditions:

Joining the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of scientific research. We provide a stimulating environment with numerous benefits, including:

  • An exciting and challenging position in an international and attractive working environment, and the opportunity to interact with a wide network of international collaborators
  • Cutting-edge infrastructure
  • Flexible working hours and substantial remuneration amounting to 100% EG13 TVoeD-Bund
  • An initial contract duration of 24 months

Application:

The Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics gives priority to applications from severely disabled candidates with equivalent qualifications. Furthermore, we strive to increase the proportion of female employees and therefore specifically encourage women to apply. Interested candidates should apply by August 3rd, 2026 with a CV (including a list of publications) and contact details of two referees. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until positions are filled, and early submission is given priority.

For scientific questions please contact Dr. Qun Yang qun.yang@mpi-halle.mpg.de.
