Senior Phase Tutor

Job Purpose

To tutor secondary school pupils studying for Higher or National 5 qualifications in relevant academic subject areas (Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics and Physics), to improve academic attainment in these subject areas and improve the pupils’ prospects of progression to Higher Education. To raise awareness and aspiration of Higher Education (HE) and provide the pupils with key skills required for successful HE study.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To tutor secondary school pupils in the relevant academic subject, delivering tutoring sessions for small groups of 3-5 pupils.

2. Working with core Widening Participation (WP) staff and school contact teachers, contribute to the development and use of appropriate course materials to ensure that content and methods of delivery meet learning objectives.

3. Utilising Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) course specifications, design a series of tutoring sessions, working with school contact teachers, to ensure they support the school curriculum and target the areas of most relevance to the individual pupils.

4. To mark pupils’ work and provide feedback to enable improvement in performance over the course of the programme.

5. To record pupil attendance and submit records weekly to the WP office and relevant secondary school(s).

6. To maintain regular contact with fellow tutors, Widening Participation and school staff and to inform WP and school staff of any problems encountered during sessions.

7. Working with WP staff, contribute to programme evaluation.

8. Submit end-of-programme reports on pupil progress to the WP Office.

9. Work flexibly and prepared to deliver sessions in alternative formats, i.e., in-person, online or blended.

10. Facilitate introductory on-campus sessions with participants.

11. Conduct other duties as required to support the WP team in successfully widening participation to Higher Education and the University of Glasgow.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications 

Essential:

A1 An undergraduate degree in relevant subject specialism.

A2 Sound understanding of the learning skills required for successful study in Higher Education.

A3 Current knowledge of the Scottish secondary school system.

A4 Will have undergone an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check.

Desirable:

B1 Current knowledge of the Scottish HE and FE systems.

Essential:

C1 Excellent oral and written communication skills.

C2 Excellent interpersonal skills.

C3 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

C4 Ability to work remotely.

C5 Effective time management skills.

C6 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.

C7 Demonstrable ability to communicate and lead school level students and university applicants in a friendly, student focussed manner.

C8 Effective I.T. skills and experience of relevant programmes e.g., Microsoft packages (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Teams), Moodle, or similar.

C9 Comfortable with accepting change and demonstrable ability to work flexibly.

C10 Friendly and student-centred approach.

C11 Enthusiasm for wider access and education.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Broad teaching experience at undergraduate, FE or school level.

E2 Proven track record in teaching.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 - £37,694 per annum, pro-rated to the number of hours assigned to, and worked by, you.

This post is fixed term from 25 January 2027 to 25 July 2027 and offered on a fractional basis to work a minimum of 25 hours over the duration of the contract period.
