Software Engineering Manager, Payments Platform

Software Engineering Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of Engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure Engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a Software Engineering Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. Teams work all across the company, in areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design; the list goes on and is growing every day. With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

Whether it is paying online with Autofill, using tap and pay in stores, or using the Google Pay app, the Payments team at Google is focused on making payments simple, seamless, and secure. In addition to consumer payment technologies, the Payments team also powers the money movement between Google and its consumers and businesses.

Responsibilities:

• Lead, manage, and develop a team of Software Engineers. Perform talent reviews, ensure growth opportunities exist for top talent, and build a healthy team culture.
• Exercise the technical judgment and decision-making expected of Staff-level engineers to guide system architecture and design. Ensure technical decisions are made promptly and risks are proactively managed to unblock engineers.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders from Product, Program, Payments Compliance and Export Legal teams to develop new capabilities, publish multi-year roadmaps, and improve the quality and reliability of existing solutions.
• Manage the infrastructure for Sanctions platform, ensuring robustness, scalability, and reliability while actively addressing technical debt.
• Partner with the Product Manager to understand the legal and compliance requirements for sanctions screening, proposing scalable, common, or customized solutions.

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
• 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role.
• 2 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.

Preferred qualifications:

• Master's Degree or PhD degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• Experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable products and services for external clients.
• Experience with large-scale backend server infrastructure (e.g., Monarch, Spanner, etc.).
• Proven ability to demonstrate Staff-level technical judgement and decision-making for large-scale backend systems.
• Background in the compliance domain.
• Excellent working proficiency, communication skills, and experience managing cross-functional stakeholder relationships.
