Staff Electrical Engineer

WHOOP is hiring a Staff Electrical Engineer to play a critical technical leadership role in the development of our next-generation wearable platform. As part of the Hardware Engineering team, you will develop a deep understanding of electrical system behavior through rigorous test, characterization, analysis, and hands-on debugging, then translate those insights into architecture, schematic, and design improvements. You will work across Electrical, Mechanical, Firmware, Systems, Manufacturing, and Software teams to identify performance limitations, resolve complex system-level issues, and accelerate the path toward robust, production-ready hardware.

This is a hands-on player-coach role for an engineer who combines deep electrical expertise with exceptional systems thinking and technical judgment. You will manage and develop a small team of electrical engineers while remaining deeply engaged at the bench—defining the highest-value technical questions, designing experiments to answer them, interpreting complex data, and driving the resulting design decisions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead electrical system characterization and technical investigations, developing a deep understanding of system behavior across power, mixed-signal circuitry, digital interfaces, sensing, noise, timing, and other critical performance areas

• Define and execute experiments that efficiently answer complex engineering questions, isolate variables, identify root causes, and expose interactions across electrical subsystems and the broader product

• Translate characterization results and system insights into actionable architecture, schematic, component, layout, firmware, and system-level design improvements

• Drive resolution of complex electrical and cross-functional technical issues, using first-principles analysis, bench measurements, device telemetry, and structured experimentation to move from symptoms to root cause

• Build scalable characterization and analysis methods using Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools to improve test coverage, automate analysis, identify trends, and accelerate engineering learning cycles

• Partner closely with Electrical, Firmware, Mechanical, Systems, Software, and Manufacturing teams to define requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and improve end-to-end system performance, reliability, and manufacturability

• Manage and develop a small team of electrical engineers, setting technical priorities, creating clear ownership, providing mentorship and design review, and helping engineers grow while maintaining a high bar for technical execution

• Remain hands-on with schematic and circuit design, prototype bring-up, debugging, and design iteration, directly contributing to critical design changes where needed

• Establish rigorous validation approaches and success criteria that build confidence in electrical system performance across operating conditions, unit-to-unit variation, and product use cases

• Travel up to 15% domestically and internationally to collaborate with partners, suppliers, and contract manufacturers

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience

• 8+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience, with demonstrated technical leadership and ownership of complex electrical or embedded systems

• Deep electrical engineering fundamentals across mixed-signal circuit design, power management, digital interfaces, signal integrity, and debugging of highly integrated systems

• Exceptional hands-on test, characterization, and debugging skills, with the ability to use experimentation and data to understand complex system behavior and drive meaningful design changes

• Strong experience with schematic capture and PCB design/review using ECAD tools such as Altium or equivalent

• Demonstrated ability to lead ambiguous, cross-functional technical investigations, mentor other engineers, and drive complex engineering decisions to closure

• Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.

This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.

The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $175,000 - $215,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training.

In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also receive benefits and a generous equity package.

These ranges may be modified in the future to reflect evolving market conditions and organizational needs. While most offers will typically fall toward the starting point of the range, total compensation will depend on the candidate’s specific qualifications, expertise, and alignment with the role’s requirements.
