Main responsibilities:

The Transportation Manager provides leadership for transportation operations at the Portland Distribution Center to support safe, compliant, cost-effective, and on-time product delivery to retail stores. This role is responsible for optimizing fleet utilization, labor resources, service performance, and departmental financial results. 

• Manage transportation operations and the Vehicle Maintenance Facility at the Distribution Center.
• Communicate clearly and effectively with employees, suppliers, and contractors at all levels.
• Partner with Human Resources to provide leadership development for the Transportation team.
• Provide daily leadership and direction for a team of up to 150 drivers.
• Oversee inbound and outbound product movement for the Portland Market.
• Coordinate transportation activities with Warehouse Operations.
• Optimize equipment and staffing utilization in a dynamic operating environment.
• Control expenses by meeting or exceeding Transportation KPIs.
• Support the company’s continuous improvement initiatives.
• Develop department goals and quarterly operating budgets.
• Maintain on-time delivery performance in accordance with established goals.
• Maintain equipment throughout its lifecycle; partner with corporate resources for capital purchases of new equipment.
• Maintain a safe work environment for all employees.
• Manage employee relations matters, including policy administration and contract compliance.
• Stay current on transportation-related regulations, including DOT, FSMA, STAA, OSHA, DEQ, and other applicable requirements. 

 

We are looking for candidates who possess the following:

• Bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Five or more years of transportation experience, including fleet-management experience.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in transportation, distribution, logistics, or a related operational environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and other relevant business applications preferred.
• Working knowledge of transportation-related software, including route optimization, onboard computer, and dispatch systems; experience with CAMS Prospero and Omnitracs XRS preferred, if applicable.
• Strong analytical, organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.  
• Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop staff.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated success improving cost, productivity, service, or operational performance.
• Labor relations experience, including contract administration, negotiations, and arbitration, preferred or required as applicable.
• Travel up to 5% may be required and may occasionally include weekend travel. 

 

Physical Environment and Working Condition:

• Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment. The employee in this role may spend part of the workday moving throughout the distribution center, including the yard, garage area, and warehouse floor, where hazards may include forklifts, pallet jacks, mechanized systems, and the movement of tractors and trailers.
• Temperatures in warehouse work areas may vary from approximately -20°F to 70°F. Noise levels vary by work area, and appropriate personal protective equipment may be required.
• The role may require prolonged periods of sitting and working at a desk or computer terminal, as well as use of calculators, keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment.
