Unix/Linux & Backup Administrator - (Public Sector)

At Xtremax, you will work on the infrastructure that keeps critical business applications and data available, secure, and recoverable. As a Unix/Linux & Backup Administrator, you will be responsible for administering enterprise Linux environments and backup infrastructure across on-premises and cloud platforms.

You will work hands-on with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, enterprise backup environments, server provisioning, security hardening, automation, monitoring, and disaster recovery. The role provides opportunities to solve complex infrastructure issues, improve operational resilience, and collaborate closely with application, database, network, cloud, and cybersecurity teams.

This is a practical infrastructure engineering role for someone who enjoys keeping systems reliable while continuously improving how they are managed, secured, monitored, and recovered.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, administer, troubleshoot, and maintain Unix/Linux servers, particularly Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments
• Provision, maintain, and decommission servers across development, testing, and production environments
• Perform OS hardening, security patching, vulnerability remediation, and configuration compliance checks
• Monitor system availability, capacity, logs, and performance, and resolve infrastructure incidents promptly
• Administer user accounts, privileged access, file systems, storage, permissions, system services, and scheduled jobs
• Manage enterprise backup infrastructure, including backup policies, schedules, retention requirements, and storage capacity
• Monitor backup jobs, investigate failures, resolve exceptions, and support system, application, database, and file-level backup and recovery requirements
• Conduct restoration tests and disaster recovery exercises to validate system and data recoverability
• Develop and maintain shell scripts, Ansible playbooks, and automated workflows for provisioning, patching, backup monitoring, recovery validation, compliance checks, and reporting
• Maintain accurate CMDB records, SOPs, technical documentation, operational runbooks, and recovery procedures while working with infrastructure and application teams on technical changes

Requirements

• Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline
• Relevant experience administering enterprise Unix/Linux and backup environments
• Strong hands-on knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, including system services, storage, file systems, networking, permissions, package management, logging, security, and troubleshooting
• Experience with enterprise backup technologies, including configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, restoration, and disaster recovery testing
• Good understanding of backup retention, encryption, access control, off-site protection, and recovery requirements
• Experience in server provisioning, patching, performance monitoring, vulnerability remediation, and disaster recovery
• Working knowledge of shell scripting and automation tools such as Ansible
• Strong analytical, documentation, communication, and stakeholder-management skills
• Ability to participate in incident response, planned maintenance, and operational support outside normal working hours when required

Preferred

• Familiarity with virtualisation and cloud infrastructure
• Exposure to storage technologies, Infrastructure as Code, ITSM, CMDB, and observability tools
• Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
• Relevant enterprise backup technology certification
• Relevant Ansible, cloud, virtualisation, or IT service management certification
