WGL - Senior Advisor, Incident & Emergency Management

Job Description

Washington Gas is seeking a Sr. Advisor, Incident & Emergency Management to serve as a subject matter expert responsible for strengthening the organization’s emergency preparedness, incident response, and operational resilience.

In this role, you will lead and support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of emergency management programs and provide technical expertise during significant incidents, Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activations, severe weather events, infrastructure disruptions, and other emergency situations.

You will partner closely with Operations, Engineering, Pipeline Safety, Security, Environmental, Regulatory Affairs, Customer Operations, Public Affairs, Legal, and business leadership to ensure WGL is prepared to effectively respond to and recover from significant events.

What You’ll Do

• Lead the development and continuous improvement of WGL’s Incident & Emergency Management program.
• Develop and maintain emergency response plans, procedures, playbooks, tools, and supporting documentation.
• Provide subject matter expertise and guidance to leadership on emergency preparedness, response strategies, and operational readiness.
• Coordinate and support response activities during utility emergencies, operational incidents, severe weather, security events, and infrastructure disruptions.
• Support EOC and Incident Command System (ICS) activations and serve in designated leadership roles as assigned.
• Lead emergency exercises, tabletop simulations, drills, training, and readiness assessments.
• Conduct preparedness assessments, risk and hazard analyses, and identify opportunities to strengthen organizational resilience.
• Lead after-action reviews and ensure lessons learned and corrective actions are incorporated into emergency plans and practices.
• Build relationships with emergency management agencies, regulators, public safety organizations, mutual aid partners, and other external stakeholders.
• Provide leadership with emergency preparedness updates, metrics, briefings, and recommendations.

What You’ll Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Public Safety, Safety, Security, Environmental Science, Utility Operations, Business Continuity, Public Administration, Engineering, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
• 8–10 years of progressively responsible experience in emergency management, utility or industrial operations, public safety, military operations, crisis management, business continuity, security, or a related field.
• Experience supporting emergency response operations, preparedness programs, exercises, and incident investigations.
• Working experience within Incident Command System (ICS) and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) environments.
• Experience coordinating cross-functional teams during complex operational or emergency events.
• Strong communication, facilitation, problem-solving, program management, and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to remain effective in high-pressure situations and provide clear, timely recommendations to leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

• Natural gas utility, energy, critical infrastructure, or industrial operations experience.
• Experience supporting multi-state or multi-jurisdictional operations.
• Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), FEMA Professional Development Series, or relevant business continuity certification.
• Advanced ICS training, including ICS-300 and ICS-400.
• Experience with EOC activations, large-scale emergency exercises, disaster response, mutual assistance, or utility restoration activities.

Additional Requirements

This role requires flexibility to support emergency incidents and significant operational events outside of normal business hours. Travel to operating locations, emergency sites, and regional response activities may be required, as well as extended hours during emergencies, severe weather, or operational disruptions.

We offer a competitive salary range of $114,700 to $166,450 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
